LIHSA Celebrates Annual Faculty Alumni Gala
On Friday evening, April 30th the Long Island High School for the Arts honored the memories of the Nassau BOCES Board of Education members: George Farber, Richard L. Ornauer, and Iris Wolfson at the annual Faculty Alumni Gala. Following an outstanding Art Exhibit and Sale, audience members enjoyed a performance in the Seymour Weiner Theatre and a Dessert Buffet at the Cafe des Artistes Culturels. The enthusiastic and generous support of our school's family and friends to our Scholarship Funds enables us to award more than $200,000 to deserving students to help them continue their education in the arts. We thank all those who celebrated with us the unwavering support and contributions of George Farber, Iris Wolfson, and Richard Ornauer.
Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Awards LIHSA Students Scholarships
The Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council has awarded 4 LIHSA students scholarships in recognition of their excellence in the arts: for Music, Michael Liepper from the Roslyn school district, Heather Conn in Dance from the Locust Valley school district, John Gonzales in Music Composition from the Levittown school district, and Jay Lucks in Visual Arts from the Roosevelt school district were awarded scholarships for their artistic achievements.
Reach for the Stars at LIHSA's Open House
On Saturday, April 24th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM hundreds of visitors stopped by at the Open House. Prospective students could sketch from a live model, sit in on a jazz improv or dramatic happening, take a dance class, join our theatre 'techies' in creating special effects, watch an Interarts Student Performance in our main theatre and view the work of our visual arts students in the LIHSA Art Gallery. Visitors toured our state of the art facility, chatted with our staff of teachers and practicing professional artists, and met with parents of current and former students. They learned about our many program offerings from our half day and full day high school to our Summer Arts Academy and After School and Adult Education programs.
Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Awards Scholarships to LIHSA Student
The Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council's Annual Talent Competition was held at LIHSA on March 6th, 2010. On Sunday, April 25th, the Arts Council announced the winners at the Awards and Reception ceremony. Receiving 1st place in Vocal Music, Leandra McNair from the Westbury school district was granted a $200 U.S. Savings Bond.
LIHSA After School Program Begins
The LIHSA After School Program is designed for students in grades 6th through 8th and offers young artists an opportunity to explore and develop their creative talents in an enriching and encouraging atmosphere with practicing professional artists. Classes were conducted for eight weeks February 9th, 23rd, March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and April 13th, and 20th from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Master Class in Juggling
LIHSA hosted a Master Class in Juggling on Wednesday, April 7th from 1:00-2:30.
College Night for Juniors
On Tuesday evening, March 9th at 7:00 PM parents of Juniors were invited to LIHSA to begin learning about the college prepartion process. For LIHSA students who audition and prepare writing and art portfolios, short films, and music videos, the process can be complex. LIHSA's College Communications teacher, Michele Zimmerman began the evening in our main theatre with a comprehensive seminar. Afterwards, parents attended their student's department where the coordinators addressed the specifics of the process in the students' specialized area.
LIHSA Hosts Annual Guidance Counselor Day
On Friday, March 5th LIHSA hosted its Annual Guidance Counselor Day from 8:15 AM-2:30 PM. Nassau and Suffolk County high school guidance counselors had the opportunity to tour our state of the art facility, meet our faculty of teachers and practicing professional artists and learn why our typical graduating class of one hundred students earn more than 7 million dollars in scholarships and grants each year. Counselors learned about our Digital Music and Media Laboratory where students can learn to do everything from film and video game scoring to orchestration and popular music production. In our Film department, counselors could view our student produced film that won the Best Student Film from the Long Island Film Festival. Our Technical Theatre department students demonstrated their expertise in professional lighting design, audio production, and stage management skills. Counselors met with students from their districts in a Q & A panel discussion group. Following a luncheon counselors had the opportunity to view the work of their Visual Arts department students in our main gallery and attend an Interarts Workshop performance in the LIHSA Theatre.
Jazz Vocalist Lenora Helm Performs
On Monday, March 1st, former staff member, Jazz Vocalist Lenora Helm performed at LIHSA. Accompanying Ms. Helm was the Jazz Ensemble from North Carolina Central University. Following the performance there was a Q. and A. session for LIHSA students and staff.
